Suffolk appoints new police chief

Following a nationwide search that included a community feedback survey, Suffolk’s new Police Chief was appointed by City Manager Albert S. Moor II on Friday, June 21.

James “Danny” Buie, who has served as interim police chief since 2023, has been appointed the new police chief, effective Monday, July 8, 2024.

Buie has served the Suffolk Police Department for 27 years. He was hired in September 1996 after graduating from the Chesapeake Police Academy and has served in a variety of capacities including field training officer, special investigations narcotics officer, sergeant of the newly formed Neighborhood Enforcement Team (NET), and more. Before being named Interim Chief of Police in 2023, Buie was promoted to Deputy Chief (Major) of Criminal Investigations in 2017.

During his tenure, Buie has earned numerous qualifications, including serving as a lead hostage negotiator, SWAT operator, SWAT team leader, senior SWAT officer, gang specialist, and new officer leadership trainer.

In addition to being a graduate of West Point Leadership School, the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS), Buie also completed the FBI National Academy, Session 264, in 2016.
